It says he was arrested when he turned up at his home in Melaka.
PETALING JAYA: The man said to have stolen RM600,000 from a bank vault in Damansara Heights here on Sept 8 has been arrested, NST Online reported.
It said the man, in his 30s, was arrested when he turned up at his house in Batu Berendam, Melaka, about 7pm yesterday.
Police also recovered some cash, believed to be part of the loot from the bank.
The man, a father of two, was brought to Kuala Lumpur for further investigations, the news portal said.
The man, wearing a pair of shorts, a T-shirt and slippers, had walked into the bank about 12.30pm, posing as a fire extinguisher technician tasked with doing an inspection.
The bank manager told him to leave when he could not provide proper papers.
However, when the manager stepped out for lunch, the man is believed to have managed to enter the bank vault and grabbed the money.
He was seen on CCTV footage leaving the bank with a backpack.
Police suspect he may have used a magnet to ensure the vault door did not close properly to gain access.
The theft was only discovered two hours later.
After the man’s picture was circulated widely in the media, at least 20 other victims are believed to have contacted police to claim he had entered their premises using various excuses to steal items like handphones, laptops and cash.
These are said to have occurred in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor since 2014.
